Frequently asked questions

The practical questions customers ask most often — about getting ready, how the work is done and what happens afterwards.

This page brings together the practical questions — about how to prepare, how the work goes and what happens afterwards. If you are looking for a description of a particular service, see the relevant section: replacement, installation, verification, sealing and documents or for property managers.

Before you send a request

How do I work out how many meters I have?
An apartment most often has two — one for cold water and one for hot. They are usually found in the bathroom or the toilet, often behind an access hatch or a plastic panel. If the apartment has a separate water supply to the kitchen, there may be more. You do not have to know the exact number in order to submit a request — if you are not sure, give an approximate number or ask for advice, and we will establish it on site.
How do I find the meter readings, and do I need to know them in advance?
The readings are the digits on the meter dial. Usually the black digits show cubic metres and the red ones litres, and billing uses the black figures. You do not have to know them in advance, because we record them ourselves during the work and enter them in the certificate. If you have them written down, bring them along — it helps to confirm that everything matches.
Do I need to contact my property manager first?
Some buildings have their own procedure set by the property manager — for example, requiring advance notice of a planned replacement, or accepting documents in a particular format. If you know that your building has such a procedure, it is worth checking it before the work. If you do not know, that is not an obstacle: we prepare standard documents, which are sufficient in most cases.
What should I do if I am not sure what I need?
That is perfectly normal, and a large share of requests are exactly like that. Select “Not sure — I need advice” in the form and describe the situation in your own words: how old the meter is, whether there is a problem, whether you have received any notice. That is enough for us to understand what to propose.
Do you work in my area?
We work throughout Riga and the Riga region. For properties outside this area we agree individually — give the location of the property in your request and we will tell you whether we can come out.
Installing a water meter and checking the connections
Most questions are about what happens during the work and after it.

How the work is done

Do I need to be there while the work is carried out?
Yes. The meters are inside the apartment, so an adult needs to be at home to let the technician in and sign the certificate. It does not have to be the owner — it can be a family member or another person you trust, provided the owner has agreed to it.
Will there be mess or damage after the work?
Replacing a meter is relatively clean work — there is usually no need to drill or break anything. A small amount of water can run out of the pipes, so we put absorbent material down in the work area. When the work is finished we tidy up.
Do I need to empty the cupboard under the sink?
If the meters are in a cupboard or behind a panel, clear access speeds up the work considerably. If there is a lot stored there, it is worth taking it out beforehand. If that is not possible, just tell us — a solution can usually be found, the work simply takes a little longer.
What happens if a problem comes to light during the work?
It sometimes happens that removing the old meter reveals a faulty shut-off valve or heavily limescaled connections. In that case we stop and explain what we have found, what it means and what it would cost. We only continue once you have confirmed — we do not want anything appearing on the invoice as a surprise.
Can you work in the evenings or at weekends?
We agree working times individually. As this is not emergency work, we plan it — tell us in your request which times suit you and we will look for a solution.

After the work

When does the new meter start counting?
Immediately after installation. That is why, during the work, we record both the closing readings of the old meter and the opening readings of the new one — this makes it clear where one meter's record ends and the other's begins.
Who do the documents go to, and when?
The documents are usually submitted to the building's property manager or the service provider, and it is worth doing so soon after the work, so that the next invoice already reflects the new meter. The exact procedure is set by your building. Whether we or you submit them is something we agree case by case.
What do I do with the old meter?
Unless you have a reason to keep it, we take the old meter away and dispose of it. If you would like to keep it — for example, if you are planning to dispute earlier invoices — just say so and we will leave it with you.
Does the new meter need any maintenance?
No routine maintenance is needed. What is practical is to check occasionally whether there is any moisture or limescale around the meter and whether the seal is still in place. If you notice that the meter has misted up, is not turning, or the readings look illogical, it is worth having it checked.
What if I have questions after the replacement?
Get in touch using the request form and describe the situation. The form has a field for additional information — note there that it concerns work that has already been done.

Money and documents

Why is there no price list on the website?
Because the final amount is affected by things that cannot be known in advance: the number of meters, where they sit, how accessible they are and the condition of the shut-off valves. A published figure that then changes is worse than an honest individual quote. For more on how the price is made up, see the Pricing section.
Does getting a quote cost anything?
No. Submitting a request and receiving a quote is free and places no obligation on you. If the quote does not suit you, you can simply not proceed.
Do you issue invoices and documents to companies?
Yes. If the service is needed by a company or a property manager, indicate that in the form by selecting the matching property type, and describe the property in the additional information field. We prepare the documents accordingly.
What is the difference between the certificate and the meter passport?
The meter passport, or meter certificate, is the manufacturer's document that comes with the meter and confirms its technical data. The replacement certificate is a document about the specific job: what was removed, what was installed, with which readings and when. A property manager usually needs both.

About us and getting in touch

How does contact work after a request?
We work with requests that come through the form and then call you ourselves. This means no request gets lost between calls, and that we call you already briefed. Fill in the form and we will get in touch on the phone number you provide — usually within 5 minutes.
Are you the Riga water utility or a property manager?
No. We are a private service provider. We are not a water supply provider, a state or municipal authority, your building's property manager or an accredited laboratory. If your question concerns invoices or your building's procedures, only your property manager or service provider can answer it.
Can you tell me which requirements apply to my building?
Requirements can differ depending on the type of property and the particular building's procedures, and they change over time. We do not take on the role of explaining which requirements apply to your specific property. We recommend checking them with your property manager or service provider — and we will carry out the work in line with what you have established.
How quickly will I get a reply to my request?
We usually call within 5 minutes of the form being submitted. So that the call can be specific straight away, please state the type of property, the number of meters and what you need in the form.
